February 4-5 Snow

Updated 6:30 a.m.Feb. 6

A strong surface low is taking a very similar track as last week's storm, causing headaches for many.  This storm, however has pushed precipitation and warmer temperatures farther north.  So many people that ended up with near a foot of snowfall last weekend won't have to deal with that this time.  It also means that we are in line to get snow this time!  In fact, we already have some on the ground.

I'll try to update this entry as often as I can today:

Thursday, Feb. 4

4:55 p.m. | Precipitation began as light rain/sleet, changing over to very light snow, creating a dusting on elevated surfaces and grass.

Overnight, the precipitation tapered off, and slightly above freezing temperatures melted what we had when the sun went down.

Overnight precipitation:  0.03"

Friday, February 5

This morning, at 5:00 a.m., light rain was falling.  I could see a very wet snowflake fall in concert with its liquid friends from time to time.  By the time I left the house at 6:00 a.m., there was a little "slush" on my car as the snowflakes became more prevalent.

Here are some pictures I took at 7:15 a.m.

By this time, the snow had all changed over, and the flakes were huge -- sometimes the size of quarters!  It felt like small snowballs hitting your face.

:: Update 6:30 a.m. Feb. 6th ::

The snow ended overnight, and we are left with a perfect blanket on the ground.  The temperatures were slightly above freezing all day yesterday, which made the job easier for road crews, and the roads look nice.  Just a bit slushy.

Storm Snow Total at MO-CW-1:  2.9"
SWE:  0.46"
6.3 : 1 snow to water ratio

The birds are happy that I put out their feed today!

It's good to hear from you again, Ami! I don't know how to answer your driving question without getting a big sis lecture...so I'm choosing to skirt the issue. Good luck on your test tomorrow! You'll do great. :o)

I just hope it warms a little by the 27th. Bill and I are going fly fishing on the Current that day.

OSNW3, I haven't been outside to measure yet, but snow has been falling all morning, and the ground is completely covered.

It's been snowing here since day break as well. Less than a few tenths of an inch. I'll measure when I get home.

WxWatcher, awesome report! I dig your photo verification of the snowfall measurements, a lot!

So you got 2.7" at school and 1.9" at home?! Did I understand that correctly?

We had snow all day, but nothing accumulated. 0.03" of precip though and it looked nice while it was coming down.

Oh yeah, Howard Cty in Maryland... CoCoRaHS snow report... 32.0"

Wow.

OSNW3, the totals I posted at Auxvasse were the running totals, not the amount since last report. When I left school we had 1.5" in Auxvasse, and 1.9" at Fulton by 4:30.

3 inches on the ground now, big storm coming tomorrow night. We should have a nice snow pack on the ground next week!

32"?? I can't comprehend that. The most I've seen is 18" in one day (in Springfield, MO). That was enough to shut the whole city down.

Yeah, I see the big snows forecast for early next week. It's sad I'll be in south AR, north LA for it... but my wife will be home documenting what she can. I've got snow removers on call just in case it pans out. Supposed to get 4-8 of fluffy snow. I'll be watching from my hotel room Mon/Tue night. :)

Your 3" differ greatly than my 3". Mine is mostly a hard slab of ice and yours is not. :)

Enjoy the storms, like I said, I'll be watching from south AR, north LA. (booooo...)

I love hotels. I keep the tv locked into the weather channel...sounds like a perfect way to spend your Monday evening! Looks like you're likely to get some thunderstorms Monday. Hope you don't have to drive much.

Our 3" is the heaviest, slushiest snow I've seen around here all winter. I'll take that over the ice pack you have up there. I'm sure that makes your core samples nearly impossible.

Enjoy your trip!

I'll be doing a lot of driving, unfortunately. 2 hour drive on Monday from Jackson, MS to Monroe LA. Then from Monroe, LA to Crossett, AR each day which is 1.25 hours each way. Then back to Jackson on Friday. :)

I WILL BE IN THE MIDDLE OF NO WHERE

Holy cow..that is a lot of driving.

Snap some pictures while you're down there, will ya? It'd be neat to see what it looks like down south right now.

Be safe. Make the best of it. I know you'll be glad when you're back!
