August Weather Summary

This has been the summer that just keeps on giving. I can't remember a July and August that were as beautiful as these have been. While no records were broken, the month could be summarized as consistently cool and abundantly wet.

> Days we've met or exceeded average max temp: 5

> Days with thunder: 7

Interested in the cooler weather, I began to keep track of our deviation from the normal high temperatures. What I found didn't surprise me. Here are the data from June/July/August and a summer mean.

June:
  • Max Deviation: +13° on 6/1, 6/2, 6/17
  • Mean Deviation: +5.73°
July
  • Max Deviation: -19° on 7/21
  • Mean Deviation: -6.84°
August
  • Max Deviation: -18° on 8/30
  • Mean Deviation: -5.42°
Summer High Temp Mean Deviation: -2.17°

Temperatures

As was the theme last month, we have experienced below-average temperatures for much of August. I had a few students asking if I'd close the window yesterday! I love the crisp air that September and October bring...I just never expected it to be here so early. The weather complaint compartment can take a vacation in Missouri.

High: 93° on 8/11 and 8/12

Low: 49° on 8/30

Mean Temperature (Average): 72.11
° (75.65°)

Mean High (Average): 81.9° (87.3°)

Mean Low (Average): 62.4° (64.0°)

Precipitation

August precipitation gave us another surplus of 1.01". Check out the stark contrast between 2007 and 2009. We had quite a bad drought that summer along with some brutal 100° days. We haven't had any precipitation >0.10" for two weeks now, so even though our numbers are impressive, we are feeling pretty dry right now.

Average August Precip: 3.64"

I'm starting to see some fall color here and there (maybe some trees are experiencing stress?) One tree by our school is in bright orange/yellow. I'll post any updates as I see them. Enjoy the transition everyone!

Missouri's weather this summer has been wonderful! Great job posting the averages - I feel sorry for those in other states, they will just have to take our word on how beautiful it has been!! God certainly took His time when creating Missouri. :o)

We've had the air conditioner off for a couple of weeks now. The high will be close to 80 today, but it is so cool at night that the house stays nice all day! I love this weather!!

It has been nice to open up the house and get some fresh air in! Speaking of air conditioner, the lady next door told me that she's only run her air about 2 or 3 times this summer (probably in June). Says her utility bill has been running about $70 every month. Wow!

That's great! Hopefully we will have a "mild" winter to go with this!

According to the little research I did into other summers comparing to this one, it seems that the winter has about an equal chance of being mild or cold, but a good chance of being very wet! (Hopefully a "white wet")

Here's the post

Enjoy the weekend!

I love reading how you both are enjoying the weather. Speaking of loving the weather, ours can't get any better for early September!

Your data speaks well for just how "cool" you've been out that way. Think of the $$'s saved by not running the AC!! Our's has been doing its job out here. Fortunately, our power is not real expensive.

Enjoy...

Like you said, WxWatcher, our August climate (the entire Summer for that matter) have been almost identical for our regions.

What are your thoughts on the El Nino pattern projected for this Winter?!

It sure has been a great summer. I was talking to a buddy in Austin, Texas (Ami, it was Alex) who told me that he and his wife were on their way to the lake that day. The special occasion? It was only in the 90s that day! He gave me a number, but I've forgotten already, but told me a ridiculous number of days they have experienced over 100 degrees. I feel for them, and I SURE didn't brag about our cool summer. :o)

OSNW3, it's funny you ask. I have been kicking around the idea of putting a post about our "typical" El Nino winter. I haven't done any deep digging, but from what I have experienced, my gut tells me that our winter won't be that impressive with above average temps, and below average snowfall.

I hope I'm wrong.

If I get some time this month, I'll dig up some pieces of data. How about you? I know you guys feel the effects of an El Nino differently from us. I'm excited to see how our climates differ this winter season.

Bob, please chime in on your experiences with El Nino in your area, too!

Ami, you can chime in too. Didn't want to leave you out! :o)
